Austrian National Council President Visits National Assembly

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the President of the of the National Council of the Parliament of the Republic of Austria, Wolfgang Sobotka, currently visiting Belgrade.

At the beginning of the meeting, Wolfgang Sobotka expressed his deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and to the families of the victims of the recent crime in Belgrade, at the same time praising the state’s effective reaction and measures it employed to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again.

In the course of the conversation, the heads of parliament expressed satisfaction with the good and stable bilateral relations between the two countries, the durability of which is evidenced in next year’s 150th anniversary of their establishment.

Sobotka praised the successes Serbia had achieved by implementing comprehensive reforms, reaffirming Austria’s continued strong and unequivocal support to our country on its European path, which the National Assembly Speaker thanked him for. Dr Orlic pointed out that Serbia is committed to continue working toward achieving progress in its European integration, however that process is hampered because of the difficult situation in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, caused by Pristina's refusal to implement all the previously signed agreements and form the Community of Serb Municipalities, which has been kept in waiting for more than ten years. He also stressed that the security of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija is under threat every day and that Pristina is trying to establish its own government in the municipalities where Serbs live - without any participation of Serbs in it, which is contrary to all European standards. For this kind of behaviour, as he added, Pristina is constantly looking for a reward in the form of membership in international organisations. Sobotka expressed understanding for the circumstances in which the dialogue is taking place, at the same time encouraging its participants to continue the talks so as to reach a solution and normalisation.

Dr Orlic stressed that Serbia remains committed to dialogue and is consistent in implementing the policy of preserving peace, stability, joint development and cooperation, above all achieving economic success, as well as achieving new records in its economic cooperation with Austria. "Austria is our third largest foreign investor and hundreds of Austrian companies operate in Serbia, employing more than 22,000 workers. It is particularly significant that 80% of Austrian companies have reinvested in Serbia, which is a clear indicator that our country is recognised as economically and politically strong and stable. With the development of the "Open Balkans" initiative, Serbia today represents the best destination for investments in this part of Europe," said Dr Orlic. The heads of parliament took the opportunity to praise all the previous, and coming Austrian investments into Serbia.

In the course of the meeting, they also discussed the possibilities for further strengthening interparliamentary cooperation, which, as Wolfgang Sobotka pointed out, would be strongly encouraged by a visit of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to Austria. He also opined that the activities and initiatives of the national parliaments can contribute to the improvement of cooperation in numerous spheres of interest and at the same time to the strengthening of overall political relations.

The meeting with the Austrian National Council President was also attended by Serbian Assembly deputy speakers Sandra Bozic and Snezana Paunovic, as well as the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Austria Dragan D. Markovic. After the meeting, the heads of the parliaments of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Austria held a joint press conference.
