Azerbaijan's Support in NATO Parliamentary Assembly

The members of the delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Natasa Jovanovic, Goran Rakic and Prof. Dr Zoran Dragisic met, on 24 May 2024, with the acting head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Malahat Ibrahimgizi.

On the occasion, she emphasised Azerbaijan's firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia. Ibrahimgizi pointed out that the Azerbaijani delegation strongly opposes promoting the so-called "Kosovo Assembly" in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to the status of associate member, as such a move would represent a very dangerous precedent for all other similar cases, especially considering the situation in other members and associate members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. She pointed out that the Azerbaijani delegation will share this position among other members of the organisation and provide strong support to the efforts of our delegation to draw attention to this dangerous precedent within the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

In the course of meeting, a letter was delivered from the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic, addressed to the heads of all the delegations of members and associate members in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

In the letter, special attention is drawn to the pervasive violence and open systemic, systematic and continuous discrimination against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija. It stresses that impunity for mass ethnically motivated attacks on Serbs and non-Albanian population, Serbian Orthodox Church and property has become commonplace and routine way of life on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija.

The well-planned, continuous, systematic and widespread ethnically motivated attacks on the Serbian civilian population and property by the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as Pristina's deliberate creation of unbearable living conditions for the Serbs and non-Albanian population in the area, have only for over the past year resulted in more than 15% of the Serbian population leaving Kosovo-Metohija. In addition, the entire international community is more than well aware of the shameful fact that for more than 11 years Pristina has refused to form the Community of Serb Municipalities,

According to the valid and legally binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999), Kosovo-Metohija, is a province within the Republic of Serbia under the temporary administration of the United Nations mission, and not a separate state. It follows from the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 that such status remains in force as long as the Resolution itself is in force and as such is binding for all UN member states. Moreover, so-called “Kosovo" is not only not a member of the United Nations, but also most of the member states of the United Nations do not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of so-called "Kosovo", including the member countries of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. 109 member states of the United Nations do not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of so-called "Kosovo", while over the last few years 28 countries have withdrawn their recognition.

It was indicated that granting associate status to the so-called "Kosovo Assembly" undoubtedly represented giving a "reward" to the above-mentioned behaviour of Pristina, which is doing everything in its power to obstruct the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and not to fulfil its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, which NATO and KFOR present on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija know best.
