The Poverty Reduction Committee, the Committee on Labour, Ex-servicemen’s and Social Issues, and the Gender Equality Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia are joining events to mark 25 December, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was instituted by the United Nations in 1999. It is marked in over 100 countries, with sixteen days of events organised by women’s organisations.

Committee members condemned all forms of brutality and discrimination against women and appealed for a stop to the violence. They also expressed their hope that the Families Bill would enter Assembly procedure soon, as this piece of legislation would more adequately regulate the problem of violence against women and domestic violence in general. The Committees will, in accordance with their powers, monitor the implementation of legislation from this field, providing support within government institutions for women subjected to various forms of violence daily.
