Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Meets with Georgian Foreign Relations Committee Delegation

The Chairman and members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee received, in the National Assembly House, a delegation of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia headed by Committee Chairman Nikoloz Samkharadze.

Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Chairman MA Milovan Drecun, emphasised the friendly relations between the two countries especially the importance of mutual support in light of respecting the principles of international law and preserving the territorial integrity of both Serbia and Georgia. He thanked Georgia for its principled position as regards non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called state of Kosovo, non-support for the adoption of the Resolution on the alleged genocide in Srebrenica and denying the vote of support for of Kosovo's membership in international organisations.

The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Nikoloz Samkharadze said that territorial integrity is the greatest challenge threatening Georgia's statehood and that is why it will always support any country faced with the same problem.

"In that sense, Serbia is at the top of our priorities, because we believe that the independence declared by Kosovo is something that is not in line with the standards of international law. Any double standard in the interpretation of international law leads to chaos and instability, and that is why we believe that small countries must oppose it," said Samkharadze.

They discussed the progress and obstacles in both countries’ negotiation process with the European Union, the possibilities for and importance of improving overall bilateral cooperation, especially in the economic field, the common security risks that both countries face, such as terrorist threats and risks, and the possibilities for establishing defence and security cooperation.

Both sides expressed satisfaction regarding the upcoming opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Tbilisi and the establishment of a direct flight between Belgrade and Tbilisi which will facilitate the development of economic cooperation and tourist visits.

The meeting was attended by Goran Spasojevic, Zoran Dragisic, Radovan Tvrdisic, Darko Jovanovic, Milos Gnjidic and Aleksandar Djukic.
