Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Meets with Russian Federation Council Delegation

The members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee met today at the National Assembly House with a delegation of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to discuss enhancing cooperation in the field of defence and security.

The National Assembly delegation was headed by Milovan Drecun who said that Serbia is currently facing both internal and outside challenges such as the sanctions against the Russian Federation and the closure of the Russian-Serbian Humanitarian Centre in Nis which had played an vital role during the 2014 floods on one side, and conditioning Serbia’s EU accession by recognizing the independence of Kosovo on the other. Drecun added that Serbia is also faced by the global security challenges of international terrorism and extremism and is deeply involved in combating crime at large.

Drecun said that Serbia stands firmly by its strategic partnership with Russia and would not be instating sanctions against the Russian Federation. He emphasized the importance of Russia’s support of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the UN and improvement of military cooperation between the two countries, which an intensification of interparliamentary cooperation could only add to.

The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrey Klimov said that Russia’s stance on Kosovo remains unchanged and that Russia also respects Serbia’s European path. He agreed with Drecun that international terrorism remains one of the biggest security challenges today, one that requires concentrated efforts to combat. Klimov also informed the Committee members that the Federation Council has set up a Commission for Protection of National Sovereignty and Prevention of Outside Interference with the objective to defend and protect national sovereignty. He suggested setting up a National Assembly working group to cooperate with the Commission and tackle security challenge at the parliamentary level.

The Committee members reaffirmed that Serbia is adamant in protecting its military neutral status and strives to cooperate with all security organizations to protect national security.
