Dr Orlic Meets with Portuguese Foreign Minister

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Portugal. At the very beginning of the meeting, he expressed satisfaction with the tradition and continuity of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marking 140 years since their establishment this year.

The officials affirmed the good and friendly bilateral relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Portugal, which the new, 13th legislature of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia will doubtlessly contribute to. Speaking of parliamentary cooperation, they noted ample room for its improvement, among other things, through the activities of the parliamentary friendship groups operating in both parliaments. The meeting was also attended by the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Portugal Natasa Jovanovic who confirmed her readiness to intensify contacts with fellow deputies from the Portuguese Parliament.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia informed the guest about the difficult situation in the southern Serbian province. "Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija are experiencing real terror - they are threatened with draconian punishments, arrested without any reason or evidence, harassed and beaten. In the last two decades, almost 10,000 physical attacks were recorded on Serbs and the Serbian Orthodox Church. People are living through things unimaginable in modern Europe and they no longer want to put up with violence and lies. In the ten years that we have been waiting for the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, we have fulfilled every obligation from the Brussels Agreement. It is important for us that our friends in the world know that only one side is trying to preserve peace - Belgrade, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, and no one else," said Dr Orlic. He warned against Pristina's announcement to apply for membership in international organisations, expressing strong opposition to such intentions.

In an open discussion, the officials assessed that there are potentials for cooperation in numerous areas of common interest, primarily economy and energy, expressing their readiness to work together, exchange experiences and personally apply themselves to promoting cooperation in these spheres.
