Dr Vladimir Orlic Meets with COELA Representatives

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with representatives of the EU Council Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession to the EU (COELA) and expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation with the EU delegation in Serbia so far, as well as the results that our country has achieved with its EU partners in previous years.

The National Assembly Speaker thanked for the support to Serbia's European path, pointing to the overall progress of our country, both in the economic aspect and in the numerous reforms implemented to ensure a better and more prosperous future for all of our citizens.

"Republic of Serbia’s full membership in the EU is a strategic commitment and priority of our foreign policy," said Dr Orlic, emphasising that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia had completed the reform of the judiciary begun with the Constitutional amendment last year. "In direct cooperation with the Venice Commission, we adopted an entire set of laws ensuring the highest level of independence and autonomy of judges and prosecutors in the history of our country," said Dr Orlic.

He informed the COELA representatives about the National Assembly’s numerous activities constantly improving standards in great many important areas, as well as in the work of the National Assembly itself.

On behalf of Sweden's presidency of the EU Council’s Working Party, Susanna Leesik reaffirmed the EU's commitment to Serbia's perspectives for membership, recalling that the EU is Serbia's largest investor, donor and trade partner. She emphasised the importance attached to the parliament in the political dialogue. The EU member states also stressed how important it is for Serbia to further accelerate and implement reforms in fundamental areas, such as the rule of law and basic human rights, the independence and functioning of the judiciary, freedom of expression, including media freedom, and the fight against corruption and organised crime. The member states reiterated the EU's expectations that Serbia, as a partner country and EU candidate, should comply with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, including the EU's restrictive measures.
