Drecun Receives US Armed Forces Delegation

On Friday, 13 December 2024, MA Milovan Drecun, Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the USA, and the members of the Committee and of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, received a delegation of the US Armed Forces led by Brigadier General Christopher McKinney, Deputy Director of the United States European Command, and associates from the US Embassy in Serbia.

In his introductory speech, MA Milovan Drecun pointed out that the bilateral relations between Serbia and the US have entered the phase of advanced cooperation and building a strategic partnership and that the cooperation between the two countries contributes to the stability and development of Serbia. He emphasised that Serbia is pursuing an independent, autonomous policy with clearly defined strategic foreign policy priorities, the top of which is EU membership. Milovan Drecun added that Serbia has proclaimed military neutrality in relation to military-political alliances and that it is building its own defence capacities sufficient to deter aggressive intentions towards our country and that it possesses the necessary capacities for cooperation with partners, including the US. He emphasised that Serbia's military neutrality is not an obstacle to its cooperation with other states and military-political alliances. He particularly highlighted the unacceptably difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as the brutal terror that the Albin Kurti’s regime is carrying out against Serbs. Drecun stressed that the transformation of the so-called "Kosovo Security Force" into "Kosovo Armed Forces" is completely contradictory to the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, that this formation threatens the security and survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as regional stability. He emphasised the good cooperation between the Serbian Army and KFOR.

Brigadier General McKinney emphasised that the American side is very satisfied with the progress of the two countries’ defence and security cooperation and expects further improvement of the cooperation between the two armies, especially in the field of cyber security, protection against potential threats of the use of biological and chemical weapons, as well as in the military-medical and humanitarian fields. In this context, he mentioned the material assistance provided in equipping military base "South", as well as assistance to the local community, especially in the construction of schools and kindergartens. He also emphasised the excellent cooperation with members of the Serbian Armed Forces in international missions in the Central African Republic and the Sinai Peninsula. According to General McKinney, the American side believes that the Republic of Serbia needs to lift the moratorium on joint exercises.

In addition to General McKinney, the delegation included Joshua Kaser, US Army Colonel and Military Attaché, Daniel O'Connor, US Army Lieutenant Colonel and Chief of the Office of Defence Cooperation, Marshal Carpenter, US Army Major, and Olja Pantelic, representative of the US Embassy in Serbia.

The meeting was also attended by MPs MA Jadranka Jovanovic, Ugljesa Mrdic, Darko Jovanovic, Dragan M. Markovic, Milos Gnjidic, Goran Spasojevic and Vladimir Djordjevic.
