Dunja Simonovic Bratic Elected Vice-Chairperson of PACE Sub-Committee on Western Balkans

At the session of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, National Assembly Deputy Speaker and member of the standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Dunja Simonovic Bratic, was elected as Vice-Chairperson of the Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, for a term of one year, with the possibility of re-election for another year.

Piero Fassino, member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, was elected Chairman of the Subcommittee.

The Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans is one of three permanent sub-committees of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy that deals specifically with issues concerning the Western Balkans. The other two permanent sub-committees deal with foreign affairs and the Middle East and the Arab world. These sub-committees are required to report on their work to the parent Political Affairs Committee, which approves their decisions.

Specific issues that the Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans may address include issues related to the state of democracy and the functioning and development of democratic institutions in the Western Balkans, major political challenges, issues related to democratic stability and security in the region, and the prevention and resolution of crises and conflicts between Member States.
