Electoral Process Improvement Working Group Members Meet with ODIHR Delegation

On 25 September 2024, at noon, in the National Assembly, the members of the the Working Group for the Improvement of the Electoral Process met with the delegation of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (ODIHR) visiting the Republic of Serbia regarding the Final Report on the local elections held on 2 June 2024.

The ODIHR delegation was headed by Ambassador Lamberto Zannier, head of the ODIHR Observation Mission at the local elections held on 2 June 2024.

The meeting was chaired by Robert Sepi, deputy chairman of the Working Group, and attended by Working Group members: Ugljesa Mrdic, Ana Jakovljevic, Filip Tatalovic, Ana Krstic, Risto Kostov, Luka Pusic, Zagorka Aleksic, Djordje Komlenski, Pavle Dimitrijevic and Bojan Klacar, as well as deputy members Marko Milosevic, Marina Mijatovic, Dusan Dincic, Kristina Antic and Vladana Jarakovic.

Ambassador Lamberto Zannier, after briefly referring to the recently published ODIHR Final Report on the observation of the local elections held on 2 June 2024, expressed his readiness for the ODIHR to provide support in the work of the Working Group, pointing out that it would be good if the Working Group, if it decides to request the help of ODIHR, prepares a plan of activities for further work in a timely manner.

The members of the Working Group expressed their gratitude to ODIHR for their involvement in observing the elections in the Republic of Serbia and their readiness to provide support in the work of the Working Group.

Regarding further work, it was pointed out that the Working Group has enough time to, in a timely manner, before the next regular elections, determine and prepare proposals for implementing the ODIHR recommendations and improving the electoral process. It was established that, for the purpose of building trust in the electoral process in the Republic of Serbia, an organised unified voter list is crucial, and appropriate legislative changes for the purpose of its revision will be one of the priorities of the Working Group. In this regard, it was emphasised that a key challenge in that process will be ensuring that access to voter data, as an extremely sensitive issue, does not threaten the rights of voters to protect their privacy.
