At the invitation of the chairman of the Zagubica municipal assembly, Dragi Damnjanovic, the Chairman of the National Assembly, Predrag Markovic, visited the final event of the fourth traditional Springs of the Homolje Fair on Sunday. Addressing people gathered in the Holy Trinity churchyard in Zagubica, Mr Markovic said that the National Assembly stood for the people at the time the Serbian state was formed, and that the Church was its support. “So it was 200 years ago, so should it be today. Many think that our accession to the European Union cannot be clearly seen today from Zagubica, but it will be seen. First the National Assembly needs to change. In three days it will start working according to new, European Rules of Procedure, and it will be the first to start adopting standards”, Markovic said. He added that it was not only important to adopt standards, but keep also to keep national distinguishing characteristics, as that is what will distinguish us tomorrow in the European Union, when we are equal with all others in every respect. “This is why this event is important, as its task is to preserve culture and national values, and the task of the state is, together with the Church, to do its utmost for us to become members of the European Union”, said Mr Markovic.

The final part of the event – “Echoes of Serbian Song Since the Dawn of Time” – was held in the presence of officials of the Serbian Orthodox Church, deputies and officials of the Zagubica municipality.
