Gojkovic: Progress Achieved, Continue Working on Full Equality for Women
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic congratulated International Women’s Day, 8 March, pointing out that despite the progress made as regards women’s rights in Serbia, the fight against violence against women need to be continued, as does the work on raising representation and achieving social equality for women.
Women in Serbia, just like a hundred years ago when they first marked this day, have the need to continue the fight for equal opportunities and equality, society without violence and discrimination, which is why we must be aware that the position of women needs to be improved every day.
The National Assembly has recognized the importance of strengthening gender equality through the Women’s Parliamentary Network and improvement of the legislative framework, such as the Law on Preventing Domestic Violence and the amendments to the Criminal Code passed by the Parliament, which sent a clear message that violence against women will not be tolerated.
The National Assembly will continue to work on improving the status of women through law, but we all must pull together to achieve full equality.
