Gojkovic at “Women in Vojvodina’s Parliamentary Life 1919-2018”

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic attended the gathering “Women in Vojvodina’s Parliamentary Life 1919-2018” in Novi Sad today, organized by the Provincial Ombudsman. She stressed that the fact that women are a significant part of the celebration of the big jubilee of Srem, Banat, Backa and Baranja joining the Kingdom of Serbia, is very important, as they were active participants in the Grand National Assembly, which was a precedent in Europe and a big democratic step at the time.

Gojkovic said that seven women had taken part in the historic and without a doubt most important decision of the 20th century which brought freedom to the Serbs and all the other people living in these territories at a time when women had the right to vote in very few places in the world, let alone the opportunity to be elected and take part in the work of the Assembly.

Gojkovic said that benefactresses, humanitarian, energetic, brave and nationally aware women hugely contributed to the preservation of the Serbian identity and blazed the trail to a fair and equal status of women in society, which women today are duty-bound to continue, pursuing the same goal, aware that the road ahead is not, nor has it ever been easy.

Gojkovic said that the results achieved prove that the fight for women’s rights, better representation and visibility, economic independence and a society where violence against women is unacceptable is never in wain.

In 2000, only 12.4% of the members of the Serbian Parliament were women, in 2007 that number was 21.2%, while today’s Parliament boasts 94 women MPs. Gojkovic went on to add that one third of the members of the AP Vojvodina Assembly today are women, while in 2000 there were only eight and in 2004 there were 23.

Gojkovic said that women hold many leading administrative posts in the state today, but there is still resistance to their full integration in all social, economic and political trends.

“I believe that we can do more here in Serbia by passing a new gender equality law. Having analysed the best practices in the region and other European states, it is our job to come up with the best possible ways to ensure a better position in society for women”, said Gojkovic.

She said that the draft law raises the bar for political parties as well stipulating that the electoral lists must contain no less than 40% of candidates of the less represented sex and takes a new bold step forward in eliminating discrimination from the employment process, right to income, social a health care and a number of other areas.

“Today, a century after the event in which women in these areas were given the opportunity stand in an election and opened the heretofore closed doors of politics, we have to talk more about their achievements. They should continue inspire many women in Novi Sad and Vojvodina at large, as well as all of Serbia, to be stronger, braver, more powerful. If they could do it then, then we can do it now”, said Gojkovic adding that without women and their potential, knowledge and creativity, there can be no better future for Serbia.
