In a cordial and constructive conversation, the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba Bojan Torbica and the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba Orenció Díaz Hernández exchanged opinions on the traditionally good and friendly relations between Serbia and Cuba and how to further the countries’ bilateral cooperation.
PFG Head Bojan Torbica stressed that Serbia and Cuba are connected by a decades-long friendship between the two peoples, based on solidarity, mutual respect and understanding. He emphasised that Cuba consistently supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia and does not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija.
The officials also discussed the possibilities of improving cooperation in the areas of culture, tourism and economy, opining that there is significant room to strengthen contacts and concrete forms of cooperation in these areas.
Ambassador Orenció Díaz Hernández informed the hosts about the current situation in Cuba caused by the long-standing sanctions, with a particular focus on the challenges as regards oil and energy supplies.
He pointed out that restrictions on oil imports and financial transactions significantly affect the economy and the daily lives of Cuban citizens, stressing that, despite this, the country is striving to maintain economic stability and continue development in accordance with its capabilities.
Ambassador Díaz Hernández thanked Serbia for its understanding and supporting Cuba at the international scene, emphasising the importance of solidarity and mutual cooperation in the face of global challenges.
The officials agreed that relations between Serbia and Cuba are extremely good and expressed their readiness to continue the dialogue and strengthen parliamentary cooperation, with the aim of further improving overall bilateral relations.
Torbica pointed out that this year will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro, one of the most important historical figures in Cuba and Latin America, and he announced that as the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, he plans to organise an exhibition dedicated to it at the end of May or beginning of June. The exhibition will be have two segments – photographs and documents – and will be dedicated to the life and political activities of Fidel Castro, as well as his relationship with Serbia, which testify to the traditionally close and friendly relations between the two countries.
Torbica said that the exhibition aims to preserve the historical memory and strengthen cultural and friendly ties between Serbia and Cuba, adding that the complete exhibition material will be transferred to the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in the Republic of Serbia after the exhibition ends.
