Hungarian parliamentary delegation visits National Assembly

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the European Integrations Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia today met a delegation of the Hungarian Parliament.

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the European Integrations Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia today met a delegation of the Hungarian Parliament.

The Hungarian parliamentary delegation was headed by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Zsolt Nemeth, and also comprised Committee members Jozsef Kozma, Laszlo Balogh and Peter Farago, while the meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary, Jozsef Pandur.

The Chairman of the National Assembly, Predrag Markovic, welcomed the Hungarian delegation, underlining that Serbia and Hungary, as the closest of neighbours, had to co-operate on a regular basis. He expressed his expectation that the parliamentary delegation would provide its contribution to the exchange of experiences and understanding for the position Serbia finds itself in.

The chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Gordana Comic, stressed that regional and parliamentary diplomacy is a priority for the Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as that Hungary's experience in European integrations was valuable for Serbia.

The chairman of the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Committee, Zsolt Nemeth, said that the greatest challenge Serbia was facing was upcoming Euro-Atlantic integrations, and that Serbia's decision to move in that direction was the right one. He underlined that Serbia should have a crucial role in the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union not only because of its size, but also because of the large Serbian minorities living in neighbouring countries.

Answering the question of treatment of ethnic minorities, Mr Markovic said that there could be no fair comparison of any other issue with Kosovo, since problems there were those of personal security, lack of freedom of movement, and permanent danger to property.

Mr Markovic and the deputies were assured by Mr Nemeth that Hungary would insist on Serbia being one of the signatories of any document on the resolution of the status of Kosovo and Metohia.
