Informal Green Parliamentary Group Holds Meeting on Air Quality in Serbia

The informal Green Parliamentary Group’s meeting held on Monday, 10 May 2021, professor Vladimir Djurdjevic of the Faculty of Physics and Institute of Meteorology gave a lecture on air quality in the Republic of Serbia.

The MPs were given a talk on particulate matter pollution (PM10, PM2.5), other major pollutants (NOx, SOx), the state of the air in Serbia compared to EU member states, how the current state of pollution affects the life expectancy of the population, how it might be possible to plan the reduction of emission of harmful substances, and which are the most endangered cities in Serbia. The lecture also touched on the aspect of climate change, presented to the MPs though a comparison of the state of the climate in late 19th century with today’s. Thermal power plants and Europe’s plan to switch to renewable electricity production in the next 10 years was a point of special attention.

Questions remain as to how Serbia could implement its plans more quickly and how much money needs to be invested to keep pace with the European Union in terms of active air quality care. The MPs showed great interest in how they could influence the situation and prompt institutional and systemic solutions to the problem of pollution.

The meeting was attended by the following MPs: Boris Bursac, Bosiljka Srdic, Branimir Jovanovic, Dr Vesna Ivkovic, Vesna Krisanov, Vladimir Grahovac, Gojko Palalic, Dubravka Filipovski, Zarko Bogatinovic, Zoran Bojanic, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Milija Miletic, Dr Muamer Bacevac, Nevena Veinovic, Nevena Kostadinova, Vesna Nedovic, Nenad Krstic, Nenad Mitrovic, Olja Petrovic, Sanja Jefic Brankovic and Slavisa Bulatovic.
