The delegation of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Italy, headed by Chairperson Stefania Craxi, met today with the National Assembly delegation headed by National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus.
Ragus pointed out that parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy were put in focus the current legislature of the National Assembly, which is very important in view of the challenging geo-political times. She added that the support of Italy, as one of the founders of the EU and a member of NATO, is important for Serbia on its European path, especially its understanding of the entire situation in which Serbia finds itself, as well as regarding the length of its European integration process. Ragus said that there are no open issues in the relations between Serbia and Italy, rather they enjoy good cooperation with the potential for improvement, especially in the area of modern technologies, science and artificial intelligence. Ragus also thanked her Italian colleagues for the contribution of their contingent within KFOR, whose presence gives the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija a sense of security, as well as for Italy's support in the Council of Europe during the vote on the admission of so-called of Kosovo to this organisation.
The Chairperson of the Italian Senate’s Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee Stefania Craxi pointed out that Serbia's European integration process is taking too long, which she assessed as a lack of political will. Italy has a clear position on this issue, which it will not change and will strive to achieve that political will, Craxi said. She added that Italy, as well as Serbia, faces numerous challenges, from those that involve new technologies, to security and defence challenges, and agreed that there is room for improving cooperation between the two countries in numerous areas.
MA Milovan Drecun, Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee, informed the Italian colleagues about the challenges in this sector, stressing that Serbia is a fundamental pillar of Balkan security and thus of the security of Europe itself. He reminded that Serbia is a militarily neutral country, but a country that is strengthening its defence capacities and modernising its armed forces. There is room for cooperation with Italy in the field of defence and security, especially in terms of the fight against organised crime, illegal migration, extremism and terrorism, which threaten both countries. He added that the contribution of the Italian contingent in KFOR is immeasurable, especially when it comes to the protection of our cultural and religious heritage. Drecun also stressed that Serbia is determined to resolve the challenges in Kosovo-Metohija peacefully, as well as to remain a factor of stability in the entire region.
The member of the Serbian delegation, Vladimir Djordjevic, as a member of the National Assembly delegation to PACE, spoke of the process of Serbia’s European integration, which has been going on for 20 years, as well as the issue of migration, while Aleksandar Mirkovic, as a member of the Security Services Control Committee and also a member of the National Assembly delegation to PACE, informed the Italian delegation about the pressing problems of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija and, together with his colleague Dunja Simonovic Bratic, also a member of the National Assembly delegation to PACE, once again thanked Italy for the support it provides to our country both on the European path and in international organisations.
