Joint Press Release: National Assembly Speaker and MEPs After Meeting in National Assembly

The Speake of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik, member of the Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee Matjaz Nemec, and former MEPs Knut Fleckenstein and Alojz Peterle.

In the course of the meeting, the officials expressed their willingness to continue cooperation within the framework of the ongoing Parliamentary Dialogue Process, strengthening the capacity and role of the Parliament in the process of European integration.

"We have been working with the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to establish the Parliamentary Dialogue Process from September 2022. However, we understand the current political context and have agreed to postpone the entire round of dialogue on the functioning of the parliament, which would be conducted with the co-mediation of the European Parliament. It is essential for the dialogue that all parliamentary groups have the opportunity to participate. We believe that Serbia and its citizens will find the strength to overcome these difficult moments. The good functioning of the parliament is of essential importance for any democratic society determined to join the European Union", said the MEPs, reaffirming that the EP is ready to support the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in strengthening its democratic role.

The National Assembly Speaker welcomed the readiness to hold the next round of dialogue with his co-mediation, emphasising the readiness of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to continue to lead an open and inclusive dialogue on all topics of social importance, as clearly evidenced in the current plenary session, organised in in accordance with the wishes of the opposition parliamentary groups in the National Assembly.

As agreed at the meeting, joint work on all topics previously agreed within the Parliamentary Dialogue Process will continue as soon as possible, after the summer break, respecting the circumstances and obligations of the two parliaments.
