Jovanov Receives UK Embassy Representatives

The Head of the ALEKSANDAR VUCIC – Serbia Must Not Stop Parliamentary Group Milenko Jovanov received representatives of the UK Embassy in Serbia, the Head of the Political Section William Hopkinson and Political Secretary Jack Watson.

Hopkinson was primarily interested in the possibility of improving parliamentary cooperation, which Jovanov declared good, but agreed that there is room for improvement. Jovanov expressed the hope that this will be realised through the work of the National Assembly Parliamentary Friendship Group with the UK, as well as other activities of the working bodies and MPs. Overall, speaking about the relationship between the two countries and the reputation and image that Serbia has in Britain, Jovanov said that the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, is making great efforts to turn the entire region around to talks about the economy and progress, but that outstretched hand is often left hanging, however, besides such a policy, he pointed out, platitudes from an earlier period that have nothing to do with Serbian politics often appear, and he expressed the hope that this will be overcome, among other things, through the strengthening of interparliamentary cooperation. Hopkinson stressed that the British Embassy wants to help intensify that cooperation and change the image of Serbia in the British Parliament.
The topic of discussion was the inter-party dialogue and the adoption of ODHIR recommendations on improving the electoral process. "We care about implementing these recommendations. It is certainly good for everyone to reach a consensus with the opposition parties. It will not be easy on some issues, but we will strive for it. As far as we are concerned, they are knocking on the open door," said Jovanov. He reminded that the ruling majority in Serbia is the only one that considered and seriously worked and adhered to the ODHIR recommendations.

They also talked about the National Assembly’s dynamics with Jovanov saying that it is expected that, after one hundred days of work, the Government of the Republic of Serbia will start with the legislative initiative, that is, the submission of bills into parliamentary procedure.
