Linta Meets with Representatives of UK Embassies in Serbia and Croatia

MP Miodrag Linta met today at the National Assembly House with William Hopkins, First Secretary of the UK Embassy in Serbia, and Andreas Capstack, Second Secretary of the UK Embassy in Croatia to discuss the position of Serbs in Croatia and the exercise of the rights of Serbs exiled from Croatia.

Linta stressed that, despite the country being a member of the European Union since 2013, Serbs in Croatia face discrimination in terms of exercising human rights and in the field of the judiciary. In addition, over 50,000 Serbian exiles from Croatia come up against obstructions when trying to exercise their property, acquired or other rights, he said.

Miodrag Linta said that as an MP he would urge Serbia and Croatia to launch a serious dialogue and seek just and fair solutions for their many problems in order to truly normalise relations. He stressed that Serbia is open for dialogue underlining the need to set the same standards for respecting human rights, processing war crimes and treatment of victims because that is the only way for the region to go forward. That is where the international community plays the biggest role, sending an unambiguous message that the same standards need to be applied to all, said Linta.

In that sense, it is essential that Croatia implement the Constitutional Law on National Minority Rights and the Vienna Agreement on Succession which was signed in 2001 and came into force in 2004. Annex 7 is especially important, entitled “Private property and acquired rights”, which clearly states that the rights to which citizens or other legal persons were entitled on 31 December 1990 shall be protected and restored.
