MPs Meet with Finnish Parliament Speaker

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus and the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Finland, met today in the National Assembly House with the Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Finland Jussi Halla-aho, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia.

The Finnish Parliament Speaker was interested in Serbia’s European integration prospects and the general public’s attitude toward Serbia’s EU membership, as well as Serbia’s relations with the countries in the region, the situation in Kosovo-Metohija and the current ecological topics and environmental protection.

Speaking of the current situation and challenges, Marina Ragus stressed that EU membership is Serbia’s strategic goal and praised the Growth Agenda for the Western Balkans. "We are aware that a period of great activity lies ahead of us," Ragus added, indicating that the further development of infrastructure projects, as well as the continuation of digitization, development of artificial intelligence and the energy transition, are of priority importance.

Speaking about the current debate in the public regarding the exploitation of jadarite, Ragus stressed that the most important thing right now it is to allow the experts to have their say, because exploitation is a great developmental opportunity for the transition to green sustainable energies, but it must be such that it complies with European standards and does not pollute the environment.

Speaking about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, Ragus pointed out that the rights of the Serbs living in the area have been completely derogated, from human and civil rights to the right to be medically treated, educated and returned to the territory from which they were exiled. She assessed that the goal of Albin Kurti's regime was the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo-Metohija from Serbs and non-Albanian population.

Marina Ragus reminded that the Brussels Agreement was signed in 2013 and that, while Serbia fulfilled all of its obligations assumed by signing the Agreement, the Community of Serb Municipalities, which is the guarantor of the probability of the life of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, has not yet been formed.

That is the fact in which the Euroscepticism of a part of the citizens of our country can be found, said Ragus, as well as in the situation that, due to the current events in Ukraine, it is seen more as a member of the EU than Serbia, stated Ragus.

The meeting was also attended by members of the PFG with Finland Slavica Radovanovic, Milica Marusic Jablanovic and Marko Milosevic, who exchanged opinions and views on topics of mutual interest with the Finnish delegation.

Slavica Radovanovic said that Finland’s experiences and mechanisms of social support for women victims of violence are very important for Serbia, in order to empower these women economically and socially to get out of a violent partner relationship.

Milica Marusic Jablanovic said how much she admired the culture of respect for and preservation of the environment in Finland, stating that in Serbia it is necessary to establish environmental justice in order to prevent air and water pollution and preserve the environment, which is why she opposes the opening of a lithium mine.

Marko Milosevic expressed his faith in social justice and the welfare state, stressing that collectivity is a pillar of society, as is the need to respect international public law.

The Finnish Parliament Speaker pointed out that Finland is in favour of EU enlargement, but with strict respect and fulfilment of all membership criteria. He expressed his support for the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, in order to find a sustainable solution satisfactory for all parties.
The members of the Finnish delegation also stated that ecology and the debate on lithium mining are also current topics in Finland, and that such projects should be carried out in a sustainable manner striking a balance between mining activity and environmental protection.
