Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Elvira Kovacs, Head of the National Assembly delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Biljana Pantic Pilja, and National Assembly Secretary General Srdjan Smiljanic, participated in the European Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Speaking at the first panel, dedicated to safeguarding democracy, Deputy Speaker Kovacs stressed that democratic order is the basis of the stability of every society, as well as the responsibility of all political actors, including institutions, citizens and civil society. She emphasised that Serbia is actively working to improve democratic processes, especially through the reform of the electoral system in accordance with the ODIHR recommendations, and to strengthen institutional transparency and combat disinformation, which can threaten the citizens' trust in institutions.
In her address, Deputy Speaker Kovacs stressed that Serbia is actively working on cooperation with European parliaments and institutions, in order to improve its democratic standards and continue with reforms that will strengthen democratic institutions and reinforce the rule of law.
"Preserving democracy and freedom of expression is an ongoing process that requires commitment, responsibility and a willingness to engage in dialogue. Serbia remains firmly committed to strengthening its democratic institutions and reinforcing the rule of law through reforms and cooperation with European partners," said Deputy Speaker Kovacs.
On the sidelines of the event, the National Assembly Deputy Speaker had a series of bilateral meetings with the President of the Spanish Senate Pedro Rollan, Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Saulius Skvernelis, President of the Austrian National Council Walter Rosenkranz, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Csaba Hende, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Theodoros Roussopoulos, and the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis.
