National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus Meets with Swiss National Council Members

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus met today at the National Assembly House with members of the National Council of the Parliament of the Swiss Confederation Andreas Glarner and Christian Imark.

Marina Ragus highlighted the good and long-standing relations between Serbia and Switzerland, noting that next year marks the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries.

Speaking about economic cooperation, Ragus pointed to the fact that 549 Swiss companies operate in Serbia, employing over 12,000 of our citizens. Bearing in mind that the IT sector is developing rapidly in Serbia and that we already have science and technology parks and data centres, the National Assembly Deputy Speaker said out that we should think about improving cooperation in this field, as well as in the field of education.

In a conversation with her Swiss colleagues, the National Assembly Deputy Speaker assessed that there is room to intensify interparliamentary cooperation, both at the bilateral level, through closer relations between working bodies and parliamentary friendship groups, and at the multilateral level, within international parliamentary organisations and forums.

Swiss parliamentarians Andreas Glarner and Christian Imark, who is also the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia, agreed that there is room to intensify relations between Serbia and Switzerland in many fields, and that parliamentarians can make a significant contribution to the further development of cooperation in many branches of the economy. They also agreed with the National Assembly Deputy Speaker that the "Open Balkans" provides ample room to intensify Switzerland's economic relations with the entire Western Balkans region.

The officials also highlighted the importance of Switzerland's OSCE chairmanship next year. Marina Ragus reminded the guests of the difficult position of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that they are denied human and civil rights. She said that KFOR forces are the guarantor of the safety and security of our people in Kosovo-Metohija, adding that the Community of Serb Municipalities, Pristina's only obligation under the Brussels Agreement, has not been formed since 2013, when it was signed. She said that this hinders further dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, which would lead to the normalisation of relations, and that Switzerland's support on this issue, within the framework of its OSCE chairmanship, would be of exceptional significance.

The meeting was also attended by the Serbian Ambassador to Switzerland, Dr Ivan Trifunovic.
