National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic at PACE Sub-Committee on Western Balkans Meeting

At the meeting of the Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, held in Belgrade on 10 and 11 October 2024, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic spoke at the session dedicated to economic challenges, energy cooperation, and environmental transition.

She emphasised that the Government of the Republic of Serbia invests great efforts into maintaining economic and energy stability, as well as improving the environment, as evidenced by the current National Assembly session with the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Mining and Geological Explorations on the agenda.

"For four days, we have been wasting our energy explaining that in the 21st century it is not civilized to adopt a Bill prohibiting mining, but it is necessary to make sure that mining be in accordance with all ecological standards and environmental protection regulations. If we are talking about energy stability, I was not able to get a simple answer based on what KOST received the permit of the European Energy Community, if it is known that one of the criteria is adequate infrastructure, which in this particular case is owned by the Republic of Serbia, from which it has been usurped violating all international standards," said Paunovic.

Nevertheless, despite all the obstacles it faces, Serbia remains determined to reach a solution exclusively through dialogue. "Serbia's determination to develop cooperation in the region is also demonstrated by the "Open Balkans" initiative. The "Open Balkans" initiative, launched by President Vucic, has the full support of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, this is an initiative for a better future for the region, it contributes to further economic strengthening and connecting the region," Paunovic believes.
