National Assembly Secretary General Meets with PACE Secretary General

National Assembly Secretary General Srdjan Smiljanic met today with Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The officials discussed past and future cooperation between the National Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, support for the work of our standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the improvement of the work of the National Assembly Support Service in the field of protection of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. It was agreed that in the coming period, the National Assembly Support Service should pay a study visit to the PACE HQ in Strasbourg, during which the representatives of the National Assembly committees and other bodies would learn about the Council of Europe’s work on improving the rule of law and protecting human rights.

Srdjan Smiljanic spoke about the plans for further modernisation and technical innovations in the work of the National Assembly, which will begin to be implemented after the end of the regular session at the end of December. As before, the Service will continue to provide all the necessary support to our standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, to make sure it continues to successfully contribute to the work of this European organisation, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis said she was sure the PACE expert staff will continue to be objective, principled and balanced in their approach to all parliamentary delegations in the Council of Europe and that in this respect we can expect full support.
