National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic Meets with Head of ODIHR Observation Mission

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met with the Head of ODIHR Observation Mission Ambassador Lamberto Zannier.

At the beginning of the meeting, Brnabic said that the local elections on 2 June are awaited by the citizens in a much different atmosphere than the previous elections on 17 December 2023. She said that the main reason for this is the dialogue between the parties of the ruling majority and the opposition established in the National Assembly. She informed Zannier that, in addition to the parliamentary parties, representatives of civil society organizations (CRTA, CeSID and Transparency Serbia) also participate in the dialogue.

As the National Assembly Speaker noted, for the first time in the history of our parliament, a working group is chaired by a representative of a civil society organisation, which is now the case with the Working Group for the Improvement of the Electoral Process.

Brnabic mentioned that the Working Group will also work on all previous ODIHR recommendations that have not been fully implemented and not only on the recommendations from the ODIHR final report of February this year.

The Speaker added that it is extremely important for Serbia that as many observers as possible are present at the local elections, so as to help further improve our electoral process.

Zannieri welcomed the establishment of a broad dialogue in the parliament and praised Speaker Brnabic’s efforts to that end. He highlighted as particularly positive the transparency in the work on the implementation of ODIHR recommendations, as well as the participation of civil society organisations in the entire process.

Brnabic and Zannieri agreed that Serbia will continue to cooperate with ODIHR in the future, to their mutual satisfaction.
