National Assembly Speaker Meets with EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi.
At the beginning of the meeting, Commissioner Várhelyi congratulated Speaker Brnabic on her new post and wished her success. He also thanked her for the excellent cooperation in her previous mandate.
The National Assembly Speaker stressed that in this mandate she would continue to champion the strengthening of institutions and democratic principles in Serbia. “We will continue to work on reforms and commit serious attention to harmonising national regulations with the EU acquis”, said Brnabic.
Commissioner Várhelyi congratulated the Speaker on the achieved agreement concerning the implementation of the ODIHR recommendations, as well as the talks conducted with all the parliamentary groups and the Serbian Government’s Working Group for the purpose of advancing the electoral process and strengthening democracy in Serbia.
He also expressed hope that Cluster 3 would be opened this year. Brnabic said that that would be a great step forward and thanked Várhelyi for supporting the structural reforms, stressing that they are vital for accelerating Serbia’s development.
Finally, the National Assembly Speaker stressed that full EU membership is Serbia’s strategic priority and that in the coming period she will work on advancing parliamentary cooperation with the countries in the region.
Várhelyi reaffirmed his support, adding that he was sure the implementation of reforms in the area of the rule of law and alignment of the foreign policy with Brussels would continue.
