National Assembly Speaker Meets with OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Kairat Abdrakhmanov.
The officials confirmed that they are both committed to cooperation which they noted was excellent, both at the parliamentary level, in terms of the activities of the National Assembly’s delegation to the OSCE PA and at other levels as well. Orlic said that the Assembly also enjoys excellent cooperation with the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) which resulted in the adoption of a number of ODIHR recommendations for the improvement of electoral conditions during the previous elections and thanks to which these conditions in Serbia have reached, as was commonly estimated, a democratic level higher than ever before. The National Assembly Speaker reminded the guest of the successful elections for national minority councils which additionally improved the position of national minorities in Serbia in every respect.
Abdrakhmanov congratulated the National Assembly Speaker on the results achieved in cooperation with the ODIHR, especially thanking the President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic and the Serbian Government for, he said, providing excellent funding for the institutions of national minorities in Serbia. In support of this, he spoke of AP Vojvodina as a unique good practice example of harmonious coexistence of dozens of national minorities, which can serve as an example for many countries.
The National Assembly Speaker then pointed out the particularly difficult position of the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, whose human rights are fundamentally threatened by Pristina on a daily basis. "In addition to the violation of all agreements, the deliberate avoidance of the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities and doing what was agreed upon and signed a long time ago, Serbian children are being shot at in Kosovo-Metohija, the supply of food and medicines is hindered, people are illegally imprisoned, their property is confiscated, without any legal consequences for those perpetrating the abovementioned, and it is well-known who they are," said Orlic.
Abdrakhmanov expressed his concern about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that the OSCE stands for peace and continuation of the dialogue. The OSCE High Commissioner emphasised the importance of improving educational programmes, especially language learning, as the best way to promote communication between different communities. The officials confirmed their mutual determination to cooperate on all issues of importance for security, human and minority rights of all OSCE members.
