National Assembly Speaker Meets with Slovenian President

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic received the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor, currently visiting Serbia.

Gojkovic said she was pleased that Mr. Pahor has come to visit Serbia so soon after the constitution of the Parliament and Government, adding that she saw the visit as a sign of support of Serbia’s imminent reforms and the country’s process of Euro-integration.

The National Assembly Speaker thanked Pahor for the considerable and prompt relief Slovenia had sent flood-stricken Serbia struggling with disastrous consequences.

“We know that you are our friends, because you came to us in our hour of need”, said Gojkovic.

Pahor said he was honoured to be given the opportunity to come to the National Assembly and address the MPs, underlining the importance of the parliament’s role, especially in the Euro-integration process and successful harmonisation with the EU acquis, considering his parliamentary experience and the fact that he had at one time headed a parliament.

Gojkovic informed the President of the Republic of Slovenia about the composition and work of the National Assembly, underlining how important Slovenia and its legislative authority’s experience is for Serbia’s progress toward the European Union.

Pahor reminded that this is the first visit of a Slovenian president to Serbia since 1991, adding that this shows that it had not always been easy to reach such a high level of cooperation and trust, but that today’s visit opened a new chapter in the two countries relations.

The Slovenian delegation comprised Minister of Defence Roman Jakic and Minister of Finance Uros Cufer, while the National Assembly delegation comprised the Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Marija Obradovic and the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Slovenia Biljana Ilic Stosic.
