National Assembly Speaker Opens Exhibition “Australian Women’s Assistance to Serbia in WW1”

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic opened the photo exhibition titled “Australian Women’s Assistance to Serbia in WW1” at the National Assembly House, a testimony of the courage of the women who assisted the Serbian people in one of the most difficult periods in the country’s history.

The Speaker said that the exhibition is a continuation of the cooperation with the Australian Embassy, shedding light to the two countries’ shared history.
“I would like to stress that the centenary of the Great War, started last year, should not go by without remembering the important role women played in it. They carried the load of the war and suffering on their shoulders. They played a big role in it – some fighting shoulder to shoulder with the men like the heroic Milunka Savic, some treating the wounded at the frontline like the Australian nurses in the medical units”, said the National Assembly Speaker opening the exhibition.
The Speaker said that the example of the brave Australian women testifies to the boundless ideals of humanity, freedom, justice and dedication.
Australian Ambassador to Serbia, H.E. Julia Feeney said that the Australian Embassy organized the exhibition to revive the almost forgotten stories of the brave, humane women who came a long way from home to selflessly help the Serbian soldiers and civilians, as well as to mark International Women’s Day and promote the empowerment of women and girls.
“When looking at the Great War, it is these positive stories, stories of courage, stories of humanity that need to be highlighted”, said the Australian Ambassador.
