National Assembly Speaker Receives UK Parliamentary Delegation

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with a delegation of the UK Parliament comprising the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Serbia Jackie Doyle-Price, Group co-chair Lord Rennard and right honourable Matthew Offord, Tan Dhesi and Wayne David.

In the course of the meeting, the officials discussed the continued improvement of overall bilateral relations, as well as intensification of parliamentary cooperation. Dr Orlic stressed that the National Assembly remains committed to continue fostering ties with the UK colleagues both through the activities of the committees and the PFG with the UK which is one of the largest friendship groups in the National Assembly.

He spoke of the sharp reactions and justified indignation of the public in the Republic of Serbia to the serious accusations levelled by Alicia Kearns, Chair of the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Select Committee, against the Serbian Orthodox Church and the healthcare system in Kosovo-Metohija. "Her words were immediately denied by KFOR. It is important that there are no such flagrant examples of irresponsibility and that, when they occur, they receive a clear condemnation," said Dr Orlic. The members of the UK Parliament said that Alicia Kearns’ statement reflects only her personal position and is in no way the official position of the UK Parliament or the UK Government. They stressed that they are coming to the Republic of Serbia to work on strengthening ties with our country, its promotion in the UK, as well as the promotion of comprehensive cooperation and friendship.

The officials also discussed the economic cooperation which, though it is currently following an upward trend, they agreed, still has room for improvement. Cooperation in the field of energy, infrastructure and investments was also discussed.

In the course of the conversation, the National Assembly Speaker also touched on the difficult situation in the southern Serbian province, as well as to the open terror carried out by Albin Kurti against the Serbian people. He reminded the guests that the regime in Pristina prevents Serbs from getting food and medicine and every day takes dangerous steps with the intention of provoking an open conflict. "The President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic has announced that he will request a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and an urgent session of the UN Security Council. It is important that everyone understands the gravity of the situation, clearly condemn Kurti's behaviour and do everything to de-escalate the situation in Kosovo-Metohija," said Dr Orlic. The British parliamentarians said that they are following the events in the region and that the United Kingdom will remain committed to preserving peace and stability in this part of Europe.
