National Assembly Speaker at Bergedorf Round Table Official Opening

The Speakerof the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic addressed the ceremonial opening of the Bergedorf Round Table, one of the most influential forums in Europe, gathering the most prominent figures from the world of politics and business, on Friday, 16 June 2023.

The Bergedorf Round Table, organised by the German Korber Foundation in Serbia this year, is a significant opportunity for an exchange of views on the topic "Deepening the EU - Western Balkans Partnership in Times of Geopolitical Turmoil".

Expressing his satisfaction with the fact that the Bergedorf Round Table is being held in Serbia again, after more than twenty years, Dr Orlic pointed out the importance of the discussion taking place within it. He pointed out that the current geopolitical situation has highlighted the importance of peace, stability and mutual cooperation as the most important values and priorities, which the Republic of Serbia, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, remains committed to.

He stressed that Serbia is persistent on its European path, impacted to a significant extent by the issue of Kosovo-Metohija. He informed the attending about the difficult situation for Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija. "We expect the representatives of the international community to react with concrete measures to all attempts of Albin Kurti to provoke a war. We are ready for dialogue, as the only way to resolve problems and find sustainable solutions, but no one can expect us to give up protecting the security and interests of the Serbian population in Kosovo-Metohija. Kurti's violence must stop immediately, as well as the occupation of the municipalities inhabited by Serbs. There is no more time to wait for the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities," said Dr Orlic.

Dr Orlic pointed out the importance of further EU enlargement, adding that it is time for concrete steps and a credible perspective for the membership of the Western Balkans in the EU. He stressed the importance of the "Open Balkans" initiative, which pursues a policy of peace, stability and joint development of the entire region and represents an important element of state policy in today's Serbia.
