Opposition Parliamentary Groups Meet with European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Delegation

Representatives of the opposition parliamentary groups met, in the National Assembly, with the delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament (AFET), visiting the Republic of Serbia.

MP Marinika Tepic spoke of the current events that have been happening in Serbia in the past period, after the adoption of the European Parliament's Resolution on Serbia, which she assessed was supported by facts and reflects the situation in the country. She was especially grateful that the Resolution makes a distinction between Serbia and its citizens on the one hand and the government itself on the other, pointing out that Serbia is not the Serbian Progressive Party, and that there are a large number of citizens who have a different opinion and demand changes.

Tepic informed the guests about the current extraordinary session of the National Assembly, where amendments and modifications to judiciary laws are being considered, assessing that this is a decisive blow to the destruction of the Serbian judiciary.

She added that purges are currently being carried out in the police, the courts and the judiciary, adding that the situation in the media is unfavourable and that repression is growing, through all executive bodies. The situation in the society is disturbing, tense and on the verge of conflict, Tepic pointed out. Bearing in mind that Serbia is in a pre-election year, all this does not contribute to having a fair and honest election, she noted, adding that there are mechanisms that the members of the EP can use to provide support to the citizens of Serbia, primarily through pressure from the European Commission.

MPs Djordje Stankovic, Radomir Lazovic, Borko Stefanovic, Vladimir Djordjevic, Stefan Janjic, Ahmedin Skrijelj, Aleksandar Jovanovic, Zeljko Veselinovic and Aleksandar Pavic also spoke at the meeting with the delegation of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee.

Informing the guests about the situation in the country, they emphasised that there are increasing pressures and attempts to additionally control the judiciary, and that the repression of the citizens continues, brutality against students and retaliation against employees in the education sector. They also pointed to the bad situation in the media. In the meeting, the MPs who belong to parties that represent the views of Euroscepticism, also pointed out their reasons for it.
