PFG with Israel Meets with Israeli Ambassador to Serbia
Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Israel, MA Milovan Drecun, and the PFG members met today in the National Assembly House with the Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Avivit Bar-Ilan.
Speaking about the traditionally good relations between Serbia and Israel and the Serbian and Jewish people, linked by great suffering during the Second World War, MP Drecun opined that this forms a solid basis for developing and furthering good cooperation, both at the political and interparliamentary level, as well as in the fields economy, trade and tourism.
Drecun reminded the guest that Serbia condemned the terrorist attacks of Hamas on Israel, for which the Israeli side expressed its gratitude on several occasions, and expressed his belief that Israel will successfully deal with all problems.
He said that the relations between the two countries can be strengthened in many areas, through parliamentary diplomacy and connection of the two parliaments’ friendship groups, as well as members of the working bodies responsible for areas of mutual interest, such as agriculture, energy, the environment and gender equality. He particularly emphasised the importance of parliamentarians' cooperation in the field of defence, in view of the many current cross-border security challenges, such as the threat of radical Islamism.
Milovan Drecun also pointed to the possibility of cooperation and mutual protection of the two countries’ interests in multilateral parliamentary organisations, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, OSCE PA and the NATO PA, emphasising that, despite the fact that Israel has recognised the independence of the so-called state of Kosovo, for Serbia, the support for its interests and views would be of great importance in these organisations.
In the course of the meeting, he also informed the Ambassador about the difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, saying that the human and civil rights of the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija are constantly being violated and their property is not being protected, and that the brutal ethnic cleansing of that territory from Serbian and non-Albanian population is underway. "Belgrade remains committed to dialogue and a peaceful solution to the Kosmet problem," Drecun pointed out, adding that "Pristina is blocking dialogue and making unilateral moves, directed against the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija."
Israeli Ambassador Avivit Bar-Ilan stressed that Israel attaches great importance to the bilateral relations with Serbia, stating that the strong friendship has been confirmed in the past year since the war broke out in Israel, especially since Serbia condemned the terrorist attack by Hamas from the first day.
She agreed that there is great potential to raise economic and trade cooperation to an additional, higher level, as well as cooperation in the field of tourism, in infrastructure projects, in the sector of renewable energy sources and biotechnology.
The meeting was also attended by PFG members Olja Petrovic, Dr Ugljesa Mrdic, Stasa Stojanovic, Djordje Komlenski, Dr Lidija Sarac, Vesna Djurisic, Aleksandar Djukic, Vesna Savovic Petkovic and Katarina Stojanovic.
They exchanged opinions with the Israeli Ambassador on the possibilities of concrete cooperation, especially in local areas, visits to which could reveal all the tourism and economic potential of Serbia.
