PFG with UK Meets with British Ambassador

Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the UK Milan Radin and the PFG members hosted today UK Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Edward Ferguson.

Radin and the PFG members welcomed the Ambassador, emphasising that, with its 52 members, the PFG with the UK is one of the largest friendship groups in the National Assembly which is clear evidence of the MPs’ desire for sincere cooperation and mutual understanding. He noted that diplomatic relations, dating back to 1837, have had a large number of ups and downs throughout history, but that the trade exchange between the two countries, which has exceeded one billion pounds, is an indicator of a serious partnership. He explained that the UK, as one of the most important financial centres in Europe, represents a serious ally and, regardless of the fact that it is no longer part of the European Union, it supports Serbia and the region’s progress toward European integration.

Ferguson was grateful for the opportunity to talk with the parliamentarians and for the large number of MPs interested in deepening parliamentary cooperation with the United Kingdom. He said that he was proud of the progress of the trade exchange, adding that there is always room for its expansion. He reminded the PFG members that the history of diplomatic relations points to the closeness of the two peoples, who were allies in both world wars, as well as to the historical figures who contributed to strengthening the ties between the two peoples through their personal efforts. He added that Serbia and the UK should learn from the past, as well as look to the future together. He emphasised that Serbia and the UK cooperate in the field of security and defence, development of high technologies, infrastructure projects, and that it is of great importance to raise the reputation of the UK in the Republic of Serbia, and vice versa, to a higher level, that is, to the level that both countries deserve. He went on to say that the UK will continue to support the European integration of Serbia and the region and continue to promote the progress of democracy through the Westminster Foundation. The Ambassador used the opportunity to point out to MPs that the recently established British government has already mapped the key points of foreign policy and that the British Parliament will soon establish a PFG with Serbia. He said that some of the priority topics in Britain are climate change, sources of renewable energy, green energy and biotechnology, and that the MPs can find a common language in these fields.

The members of the PFG and the Ambassador discussed deepening and fostering better connections between the two countries’ parliamentarians, agreeing that through cultural exchange the two peoples can achieve a better understanding. The officials also exchanged opinions on the topics of human rights protection, women's empowerment and agreed that in the future they should pay more attention to areas and topics of common interest, as well as to understanding positions where they do not share the same opinions.
