Paunovic Thanks Slovak National Council Speaker for Country's Position on AP Kosovo

Serbian National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic, met today with the Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia Peter Ziga and conveyed Serbia thanks for Slovakia's principled position of non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo, as well as its support of Serbia's state policy in the effort to protect and preserve the country’s position in international organisations.

In the meeting held on the sidelines of the General Debate of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the officials highlighted the good relations between the two countries.

Paunovic thanked Slovakia for its strong support for our country’s path to European integration. She added that, as parliamentarians, they must work to improve parliamentary cooperation, and informed Speaker Ziga that a Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Slovak Republic has been formed in the Serbian Parliament.

The Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia said that the relations between our two countries, grounded in a traditional friendship and closeness between the two peoples, are at a high level, as evidenced by today's visit of high-ranking Slovak officials to Serbia.

Ziga reiterated Slovakia's position regarding Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, that Slovakia does not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of so-called of Kosovo. He added that the Slovak minority living in Serbia should be a bridge for cooperation between our two countries.

The meeting was also attended by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Edin Djerlek, National Assembly Secretary General Srdjan Smiljanic and Serbian Ambassador in the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva Milan Milanovic.

The General Debate of the 149th IPU Assembly began today in Geneva, and will last until 17 October.
