Ragus Meets with Moroccan Ambassador to Serbia

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus met today with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Mohammed Amine Belhaj.

At the very beginning of the meeting, Ragus said how pleased she was to have her first official meeting with the Ambassador, emphasising the strong diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of Morocco and thanking it for its traditional support of Serbia and the Serbian people. She added that the long history of bilateral relations, friendship and support at all levels is of great importance for Serbia, especially when it comes to international public law, with an emphasis on respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. "We are extremely proud of our joint cooperation, support and assistance at all international forums," said the National Assembly Deputy Speaker. She went on to say that the National Assembly has set up a Parliamentary Friendship Group with Morocco, headed by MP Muamer Bacevac, and that she expected a large number of activities and cooperation from it. "In the parliamentary sense, I expect an increase in the level and dynamics of cooperation, and speaking of the economy, there is really a lot of room for improving relations," Ragus added.

H.E. Mohammed Amine Belhaj pointed out that the diplomatic relations between the two countries are at an enviable level and are paving the way to a strategic partnership. The Ambassador stated that Serbia and Morocco should continue and coordinate their joint actions concerning territorial integrity and sovereignty in international forums. He went on to say that there is a lot of room for improving economic cooperation, especially in the field of IT innovations, renewable energy sources, culture, as well as in the field of heavy industry, manufacturing cars and parts for passenger aircraft. He added that parliamentary ties are of the highest importance for bilateral cooperation and defending common interests, and that friendship groups are a key element for good practices and cooperation in various fields.

Ragus pointed out the importance of mutual meetings at all levels, stating that the current National Assembly legislature’s focus is on strengthening parliamentary diplomacy, led by National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic. She reminded that the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, had stated at the 79th UN General Assembly that Serbia will create a new and special network of its closest friendly countries, among which is Morocco, and that these countries will be on the list of priorities in the future, for even deeper and closer relations. She agreed with the Ambassador that there is room for stronger economic ties and invited him to take part in bringing Moroccan companies to the EXPO 2027 exhibition.

The officials also discussed an exchange of visits at the highest parliamentary level and expressed the hope that they will take place by the end of the current year, both a meeting of the two countries’ heads of parliament and the chairs of the foreign affairs committees.
