Ruling Majority Parliamentary Groups’ Representatives Meet with European Commission Representative
Representatives of the ruling majority in the National Assembly held a meeting today with the Director General of the European Commission’s Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Gert Jan Koopman, currently in official visit to Belgrade.
National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs stressed that she is very pleased with the latest European Commission Progress Report on Serbia, which states that Serbia is ready to open negotiating Cluster 3, and added that this would be of exceptional importance, bearing in mind that no negotiating clusters have been opened in the previous three years which has led to a rise in Euroscepticism among Serbian citizens.
Jan Koopman assessed that Serbia has made significant progress in the reform processes in the past period and pointed out the necessity of cooperation between all political actors in the National Assembly, in order to achieve progress on the path to European integration. He added that cooperation with the EU is also vital in this process and highlighted the motivation of the European Commission to provide momentum to Serbia, in line with Serbia's ambition to complete preparations for accession by the end of 2026. He expressed hope that Serbia will soon complete the steps it committed to in December 2024, including in the key area of the rule of law, which EU member states have stated will lead to the long-awaited opening of Cluster 3.
The meeting was attended by the following representatives of the parliamentary groups ALEKSANDAR VUCIC – Serbia Must Not Stop - Dubravka Filipovski; IVICA DACIC - Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) - Dunja Simonovic Bratic; Social Democratic Party of Serbia - Branimir Jovanovic; PUPS - Solidarity and Justice - Risto Kostov; Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians - Boris Bajic; Dragan Markovic Palma - United Serbia - Zivota Starcevic; HEALTHY SERBIA - RUSSIAN PARTY - UNITED PEASANT PARTY - Ivana Stamatovic and MP who is not a member of any parliamentary group Edin Djerlek, as well as the Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret.
The officials exchanged views on important topics from the aspect of Serbia's European integration, such as improving electoral conditions, electing new members of the REM Council and legislation regulating the media sector, as well as aligning Serbia's foreign policy with the European Union. The MPs spoke of the activities undertaken in these areas and the results achieved so far. The current political situation in Serbia was also discussed.
