SDG Focus Group Workshop on Gender-Responsive Self-Assessment

The National Assembly’s Focus Group for the Monitoring of the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is having a two-day workshop on the Parliament’s Gender-Responsive Self-Assessment.

The National Assembly’s Focus Group for the Monitoring of the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is having a two-day workshop on the Parliament’s Gender-Responsive Self-Assessment.

Opening the workshop, IPU self-assessment expert and facilitator Meg Munn stressed that the Inter-Parliamentary Union nurtures and supports strong parliamentary cooperation, peaceful conflict resolution and prevention of discrimination in all of its forms.

“For me, a strong parliament is an efficient, accessible and transparent house of representatives where women are respected and not burdened with discrimination” Munn explained.

The structure of the parliament should respond to the needs of both men and women and gender-sensitive reforms are possible only if the entire society joins in.

Speaking of the positive change in Serbia in terms of gender representation at all three levels of power, Munn stressed that numbers are not everything, true participation and the number of women in leading positions are more important.

“Serbia can be proud of the fact that women hold the highest office in both the legislative and executive power. It is vital to continue with the positive trend which should not be just a momentary coincidence”, Munn concluded.

In addition to Focus Group coordinator Dr Milorad Mijatovic the workshop was also attended by MPs Nada Lazic, Elvira Kovacs, Stefana Miladinovic, Natasa St. Jovanovic, Dragomir Karic, Dubravka Filipovski, Ljiljana Malusic, Goran Kovacevic, Branimir Jovanovic and Dr Predrag Jelenkovic.

In the course of the workshop’s five sessions the MP will discuss the presence and status of women in the parliament, the legislative framework’s capacity to implement the policy of equality and the role of men in the process.

They will also be presented the composition and environment of the Assembly Support Service from the gender-sensitive perspective focusing on the proportion of women in leading positions and mechanisms that enable the employees to balance out work and family life.
