Serbia Could Play Positive Part in Improving Relations between Europe and Russia

“By joining the EU Serbia could play a positive part in improving the relations between Europe and Russia” said Paolo Corsini, First Vice-Chairman of the Italian Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, in the meeting with the members of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

Corsini said that Italy supports Serbia’s EU accession, adding how precious it was after Brexit to have Serbia’s dedication to European integration show that the EU is the future.

The officials agreed that the relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Italy are excellent and that their parliamentary cooperation adds to the overall bilateral relations.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that EU accession is Serbia’s primary objective, one that the country is eager to achieve. Italy’s support on the path to accession is important and necessary because by 2020 Serbia will have fully harmonized its legislation with the EU acquis and become a serious candidate for full membership, said Obradovic.

Speaking about the Kosovo-Metohija issue, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that it is essential for Serbia that its position is understood, especially after it had taken the bold move of signing the Brussels Agreement in 2013. He informed the Italian colleague about the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, stressing that to date the Albanian side has not yet established the Community of Serb Municipalities nor answered some burning questions such as the return of the displaced, security, combating crime and corruption, trafficking in human beings, etc.

“There is an intention to push the Kosovo-Metohija issue aside and include others into the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue such as the US, not to discuss the Kosovo issue in the UN like before, and all of this requires the support and understanding of friends, which is what Italy is for Serbia”, said Obradovic.

First Vice-Chairman of the Italian Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee Paolo Corsini said that his country appreciates all that Serbia has done regarding the Kosovo-Metohija initiatives.

“I think that everything set out in the Brussels Agreement should be implemented. Seeking a political solution is the way to go, which is what Serbia is doing”, said Corsini.

The meeting, attended by Foreign Affairs Committee members Dubravka Filipovski, Dusica Stojkovic, Vera Jovanovic, Ljiljana Malusic, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Milisav Petronijevic, Jovan Palalic and Sanda Raskovic Ivic, as well as Senator Vito Petrocelli, also touched on the migrant crisis and Serbia and Italy’s role in it, as well as the fight against the mounting threat of terrorism.
