Serbian Assembly Speaker Meets with Cuban President

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez to discuss the improvement of interparliamentary and overall cooperation between Serbia and Cuba, two countries bound by traditional friendship based on mutual understanding, respect and protection of principles of international law.


The National Assembly Speaker said that the visit of the President of Cuba Díaz-Canel Bermudez is a great honour for our country and that it has a historical character as it is the first visit of a Cuban president to Belgrade in almost four decades. He expressed his satisfaction with the intensification of bilateral relations in the last few years, confirming the National Assembly’s readiness to contribute to their additional strengthening. He thanked Cuba for its principled support in terms of non-recognition of so-called "Kosovo". "You have shown yourself to be friends of Serbia in action and that you firmly adhere to the observance of international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. Not only do you not recognise the unanimously declared independence of so-called "Kosovo", you always stand with Serbia in the diplomatic struggle within the framework of international forums", said Dr Orlic, adding that Cuba can always count on Serbia's support.

He reminded the guest that the two parliaments have established their partnership with a special protocol, which was signed in 2015. He pointed out that the fact that the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba is one of the most numerous in the National Assembly also testifies to the great interest of MPs in cooperation with Cuba.

The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez stressed how pleased he was that after so many years the conditions have been met to visit Serbia, pointing out that upon his arrival in Belgrade, he had the opportunity to see for himself the sincere friendship that binds the two nations. He said that for Cuba, the improvement of the cooperation between the two governments and the two parliaments is a priority task and that Cuba is ready to put all its efforts into it. "The Republic of Cuba will continue to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia wherever it may be needed and will always remain its friend," said the Cuban President. Díaz-Canel Bermudez conveyed to the greetings of the Cuban Parliament Speaker Esteban Lazo Hernández to Speaker Orlic as well as an invitation to pay a visit to their country.

The meeting was also attended by Snezana Paunovic, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Bojan Torbica, Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba, Danilo Pantovic, Serbian Ambassador in Havana, as well as Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parilla, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investments Ana Teresita González Fraga, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo and Cuban Ambassador in Belgrade Leyde Ernesto Rodríguez.
