Situation in Kosovo-Metohija and Serbia’s Rights and Duties on PACE Agenda

Dr Aleksandra Tomic, head of the National Assembly standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and delegation member Aleksandar Stevanovic took part in the debate on the situation in Serbia at today’s meeting of the PACE Monitoring Committee.

The debate on Serbia’s rights and duties and the draft report mentioned Serbia’s progress as regards the judiciary, protection of minority rights, advancement of democratic institutions and the position of independent regulatory bodies. Serbia will be visited by a PACE delegation in April and the report is expected to be adopted by the end of 2018. The Serbian delegation expects that the new resolution would recommend ending the monitoring stage and moving on to post-monitoring dialogue.

”In the course of the debate I highlighted the country’s political stability, priorities and commitment to a continuation of the dialogue with Pristina. I asked the members of the Council of Europe PA to support our reforms and the beginning of post-monitoring dialogue”, said Tomic.

The meeting of the Political Committee, attended by Marija Obradovic and Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic, focused on the situation in Kosovo-Metohija. The members of the National Assembly delegation repeated the demand that Serbian authorities be included in the investigation into the murder of Oliver Ivanovic. They also underlined the difficult position of Serbs and other non-Albanians, permanent instability and the high levels of crime and corruption.

“We also pointed out that Pristina has not fulfilled any of the duties from the Brussels Agreement and shows no willingness to improve cooperation. I was shocked by the statement of MP s of the Self-Determination Party claiming that Oliver Ivanovic is a war criminal and leader of a paramilitary force”, said Obradovic.

The delegation members appealed to finally launch the Special War Crimes Court into operation, calling the initiative of the 42 members of Kosovo Parliament a manipulative undermining of the Brussels Agreement.
