Stefanovic Receives Irish Minister of State for Europe

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic received Peter Burke, Minister of State for Europe of the Republic of Ireland, at the National Assembly, to discuss Serbia's European integration and the current situation in Serbia and Europe.

Speaking about the situation and events in Serbia, Borko Stefanovic gave a critical overview of the Government’s work, the lack of freedom and the atmosphere of hatred and division created by the Government.

Stefanovic added that, there is also the unresolved issue of Kosovo-Metohija and the fact that Serbia is the only country in Europe that has not imposed sanctions on Russia. Although Serbia is declaratively committed to joining the European Union, officially, the government is not doing anything on that front, he said, pointing out that he had submitted to the National Assembly a Resolution Proposal for the alignment of the foreign policy of the Republic of Serbia with the foreign policy of the European Union in the form of restrictive measures towards the Russian Federation, which was not adopted by the Foreign Affairs Committee.

If Serbia does not align its foreign policy with the European, it will remain on the wrong side of Europe, said Stefanovic, adding that it will lose the opportunity to protect its vital national interests in Kosovo-Metohija.

Borko Stefanovic went on to say that the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina is vital, adding that none of the political actors in Serbia is ready to recognise the independence of so-called of Kosovo, but that all open issues should be resolved and normal life should be ensured for all who live on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija. Stefanovic pointed to Kurti's destructive behaviour and the need to immediately withdraw the police forces from the north of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as set up the Community of Serb Municipalities.

Peter Burke said that he strongly supports EU enlargement and the accession of Serbia and the entire Western Balkans, for the sake of peace, stability and progress of the region, especially in the current geostrategic situation in Europe and the war in Ukraine. He added that it is also important to continue the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
