Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation and Developing Economic Cooperation between Serbia and Georgia

The delegation of Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee in official visit to the National Assembly met today with the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Georgia.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic welcomed the Georgian delegation, headed by Foreign Relations Committee Chairperson Sofio Katsarava, and congratulated them Georgia’s Independence Day.

He said that joining the European Union is Serbia’s number one foreign policy goal stressing that the country has so far opened 12 negotiation chapters, two of which have been temporarily closed, and has the organizational and administrative capacities to open more, however Chapter 35 i.e. the Belgrade-Pristina talks are slowing down the process. Obradovic explained that Serbia has for the most part fulfilled the Brussels Agreement, but Pristina’s actions seem to show that it does not want to have a dialogue. The establishment of a Community of Serb Municipalities he said is essential for the improvement of the position of Serbs living in Kosovo-Metohija.

The Chairperson of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee Sofio Katsarava said that Serbia and Georgia are very similar in some respects, meaning their history, culture, religion and reforms. She said that Georgia also wants to join the EU and could learn a lot from Serbia in that respect. She explained that Georgia is forging a path toward the European Union and its values through legislative harmonization and reforms.

The officials emphasized the importance of respecting international law and the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of internationally recognized states and Obradovic thanked Georgia on its principled stance on the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija.

The Head of the PFG with Georgia Dubravka Filipovski opined that parliamentary relations are excellent but there is room to advance cooperation in the fields of tourism, economy and education.
