Virtual Meeting with Lithuanian Parliament’s Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with Western Balkan Countries

The Head of the PFG with Lithuania Ilija Matejic and MP Violeta Ockoljic had a virtual meeting with the members of the Lithuanian Parliament’s Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Western Balkan Countries on 26 March 2021 to discuss Serbia’s European integration and the possibilities for cooperation between the two parliamentary groups.

The Head of the PFG with Lithuania Ilija Matejic thanked Lithuania for supporting Serbia’s European integration process. He pointed out the specificity of Serbia’s path to the EU due to Chapter 35 and underlined the country’s commitment to dialogue. He agreed that Serbia and Lithuania share common values and expressed readiness to further the development of parliamentary cooperation.

The Head of the Lithuanian Parliament’s Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Western Balkan Countries Laima Liucija Andrikiene reaffirmed that Lithuania supports Serbia’s the path to EU membership and is carefully monitoring the country’s European integration process. She pointed out that Serbia and the region of the Western Balkans are of exceptional importance for the EU and expressed hope that Serbia would become a member of the EU by 2027, when Lithuania is set to take over the Presidency of the EU Council. She believes that parliamentary and overall bilateral cooperation should be intensified.

The meeting was also attended by Lithuanian MPs Eugenijus Sabutis, Kestutis Vilkauskas and Valdas Rakutis.
