The Chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic received today the newly-appointed Ambassador of Cyprus to the Republic of Serbia Andreas Photiou, welcoming him and wishing him a successful mandate.
Stefanovic said how pleased he was about the official visit of a Cypriot parliamentary delegation to Serbia at the end of September, saying that this would be yet another way to strengthen the already solid cooperation between the two countries. He thanked Cyprus for its unequivocal support of Serbia’s European integration and respect for its territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for voicing its support in the European Union in matters concerning the so-called Republic of Kosovo. "We are aware that Cyprus will not change its position on Kosovo-Metohija and we are grateful for your support in multilateral forums," said the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He stressed that exerting pressure for the recognition of Kosovo, as an independent state, must not be requested from Serbia, rather negotiations with Pristina must continue, in order to resolve all open issues and begin the process of reconciliation. He also said that the arbitrariness of Albin Kurti in Kosovo-Metohija, which he compared to "apartheid in Europe", is unacceptable, however, Serbia has to be patient and wise and must not fall down the slippery slope of turbulent emotions, which the Albanian side is trying to provoke. He underlined that Serbia should solve all internal issues so that the citizens of Serbia can finally get a safe and secure country without corruption and violence, and that our path is undoubtedly towards Europe because that is where our interests and values lie.
He informed the Ambassador of his personal opining that aligning Serbian foreign policy with the foreign policy of the European Union is inevitable, if we plan to become a member of this community, and that the crisis in Europe caused by the war in Ukraine can be beneficial for Serbia and the region, in a way that the countries Western Balkans would be irreversibly positioned in the Union.
Stefanovic said that Serbia also expects the calling of parliamentary elections, with the opposition parties calling for city elections in Belgrade. He pointed out that it is necessary to have free and democratic elections in Serbia, which we do not have now, and that it is necessary to implement the findings and opinions of the OSCE mission, European Parliament and the European Commission concerning election conditions in Serbia. He apostrophised that EU membership is inevitable and necessary and possible by 2030, and that our government is doing everything to prevent Serbia from joining the EU and to be on the margins of Europe. "We have to solve this internal issue ourselves in the elections by the end of the year, but with the fulfilment of the findings of the OSCE mission on the lack of electoral conditions in Serbia," Stefanovic pointed out.
Ambassador Photiou thanked the host for the welcome, stressing how happy he was to be given a mandate in a country he considers brotherly, one that shares the same values, as well as a very similar history and culture. He added that Cyprus is a country that advocates for the acceleration of the process of accession of Serbia and the Western Balkans to the European Union, and that this process must not be lost from the EU’s focus. He stressed that the opening of clusters need to be sped up so that the public in Serbia does not lose interest in joining this community. He said that Cyprus will not change its position on Kosovo-Metohija and thanked Serbia for its commitment in the PACE regarding Cypriot territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Ambassador explained the situation of divided Cyprus in more detail and the continuation of negotiations that would be of importance for the national interest. He said that during his mandate he would continue to build closer bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as try to deepen economic cooperation which is sadly lacking considering the solid ties between Serbia and Cyprus.
The officials also discussed the deepening of cooperation in the field of tourism and bringing the two nations’ cultures closer together, as well as investment projects that would be beneficial for both countries.
