Fourth Sitting of the European Integration Committee

At the sitting held on 9 July 2024, the members of the European Integration Committee were presented the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (1 July – 31 December 2024: by H.E. Hungarian Ambassador to Serbia Jozsef Magyar.


Addressing the Committee members, Ambassador Magyar concisely presented his country’s programme to be conducted in the coming six months of the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council, drafted in cooperation with Spain and Belgium and accepted last year. At the beginning of his presentation he expressed his belief that the formation all the EU institutions will be completed by the end of October. The Presidency programme, as Ambassador Magyar said, is to strengthen the EU, especially its economy and competitiveness on the global market, bearing in mind the social framework, that is, social issues and the lives of the EU citizens, green economy and transition. The list of priorities also includes strengthening the military industry in the EU, and especially the enlargement issue, that is, the acceptance of new full members.

Ambassador Magyar stressed that throughout the history of the EU, enlargement has always been the best thing that strengthens the EU and expands its internal market. Belgium has done a lot as regards enlargement and Hungary wants to continue in the same vein and believes that Serbia’s efforts should be acknowledged and appreciated, especially its dedication and commitment to EU membership. He said that a series of EU-Western Balkans forums will be held in the coming period, it is Hungary’s intention that candidate countries attend them and the country also wants to see Serbia channel more into European trends. Another priority will be political cohesion, while the issue of migration will also be in the focus of Hungary’s Presidency, as will cooperation with partners outside the EU, advancement of the agrarian policy and demographics issues.

Ambassador Magyar concluded his address by listing the Hungarian Prime Minister’s activities aimed at formulating a European dialogue platform so as to end the conflict and bring back peace to all who need it in Europe.

The Committee members then exchanged opinions with the Hungarian Ambassador on a number of topics concerning the presented programme and other current issues.

The sitting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of European Integration.
