Gojkovic Talks to Bakir Izetbegovic and Denis Zvizdic
In the course of her one-day official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic had separate meetings with the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegovic and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdic.
Gojkovic said that Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Serbia’s most important political and economic partners in the region and the two countries share the same common priority and objective – European Union membership.
“We have the same goal and commitment – EU membership, therefore I commend the initialling of the adapted Stabilisation and Accession Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU”, said Gojkovic, adding that the opening of negotiation chapters 23 and 24 sends and important signal not only to the citizens of Serbia who had confirmed their commitment to the European path in the recent elections, but also to the other countries in the region, EU candidates themselves, which shows the strength of the EU despite the challenges it is facing.
Gojkovic also said that Serbia considers the preservation of stability and development of the region a priority, adding her firm belief that the two countries share a strong interest in cooperation within the Berlin Process which is greatly important for the European integration of the entire region and stability of the Western Balkans.
The National Assembly Speaker said it would prove significant to stimulate economic cooperation primarily as regards revitalising the connecting infrastructure, energy production, possible joint ventures on third markets, where the parliaments could contribute by ratifying governmental agreements.
The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegovic said that the two countries’ relations are moving in the right direction. Izetbegovic, however, pointed out that there is still room for improvement because, he said, “we owe our citizens peace and stability”. In his meeting with Speaker Gojkovic, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdic said that the cooperation between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is following a positive trend especially in view of mutual support as regards Euro-integration and economic cooperation and stressed that it could stand to be expanded to include other fields such as culture, sport and youth cooperation. He pointed out that regional cooperation is a priority because the development of the entire region hinges on peace and stability, and lasting stability would make the region more attractive to investors.
In the course of the one-day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gojkovic previously met with the speakers of both chambers of the BiH Parliament, Mladen Bosic and Safet Softic respectively, and finished her visit with a walk down Bascarsija.
