National Assembly Speaker Addresses Association of Kosovo-Metohija Women

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic addressed the gathering titled “Voice of support for the Serbian delegation representing Serbian interests at the International Court of Justice”, stressing that she expected that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legality of the unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence would be based on international law and justice which were on Serbia’s side.

At the invitation of the Association of Kosovo-Metohija Women, Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic emphasised that the National Assembly advocates a compromise and sustainable solution, an interest that the deputies work toward both in their activities as representatives and in the normative sphere. The Assembly Speaker reminded the participants that since 2001, the National Assembly has ratified a vast number of resolutions, declarations and treaties on the need for a just resolution of the Kosovo-Metohija issue.

The Serbian Parliament Speaker pointed out that Serbia has practically “two-thirds of the world” on its side, and that 12 countries at the International Court of Justice endorsed Serbia’s official position, two standing members of the UN Security Council among them – China and Russia.

“Serbia has the basic principles of international law on its side – preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of an internationally recognised state – the right based principally on UN Security Council Resolution 1244, UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act”, Djukic-Dejnovic pointed out.

In addition to the National Assembly Speaker, the participants were also addressed by the President of the Association Desa Toplicic and retired professor of international law Smilja Avramov, who, with their speeches and emotions, wanted to make it clear to the public that the declaration of independence of Kosovo as integral part of Serbia contradicts Resolution 1244 and express support for the Serbian delegation awaiting the ICJ’s decision.
