Second Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

At the sitting held on 22 October 2024, the members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child considered the preclusion and prevention of all forms of violence including children.

Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic said that the prevention of all forms of violence including children is a priority and an important step the Government took by establishing the "I'll keep you safe" platform.

“It is my wish to hear a report from all the relevant bodies in the executive on the operation of the platform. This is especially important in view of the recent incident of peer violence in Subotica which tells us that we must all join forces. Through the work of this Committee, the National Assembly takes part in addressing peer violence and violence in general that includes children”, said the Committee Chairperson.

The Director of the Office for IT and g-Government Mihajlo Jovanovic presented the Report on the preclusion and prevention of all forms of violence including children. He said that the platform is a unique and reliable place where one can access different institutions’ violence-related information, answers and advice.

The sitting was attended by Minister of Information and Telecommunication Dejan Ristic, Minister of Family Care and Demography Milica Djurdjevic Stamenkovski, Minister of Education Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Minister of Justice Maja Popovic, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Nemanja Starovic, Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women Tatjana Macura, State Secretary at the Ministry of Health Prof. Dr Ivana Stasevic Karlicic and the Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Veljko Odalovic.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic, and attended by the following Subcommittee members and deputy members: Marina Ragus, Snezana Paunovic, Elvira Kovacs, Edin Djerlek, Dr Jovan Janjic, Haji Milorad Stosic, Natasa Ivanovic, Natasa Mihajlovic, Vesna Nedovic, Doc. Dr Sci.med Marija Zdravkovic, Prim. Dr Nada Macura, Tatjana Petrovic Stojkovic, Anita Nesic, Ilo Mihajlovski, Dr Emese Uri, Zagorka Aleksic, Branimir Jovanovic, Milija Miletic, Slavica Radovanovic, Bogdan Radovanovic, Milica Marusa Jablanovic, Sladjana Miletic, Dr Tatjana Markovic Topalovic and Sonja Pernat.

The sitting of the Committee for the Rights of the Child, which began on 22 October 2024, continued today, 15 November 2024, with the 2nd item on the agenda - agreement on the formation of subcommittees and a working group.

Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic said that the Committee should focus on the prevention and suppression of all forms of violence involving children, and suggested that, for the time being, no subcommittees should be formed to deal with these specific topics.

Ana Brnabic supported the initiative to set up a Working Group for initiatives, petitions and proposals, for direct and continuous communication with citizens and civil society organisations. She proposed Committee member Zagorka Aleksic for the chairperson of the Working Group, while the Committee will decide on the formation of the Working Group at one of the upcoming sittings.

The Committee members also considered the initiative of the Association of foster carers "Child Smile" from Titel. They forwarded the initiative to the relevant Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs for review, and will decide on further action after the formation of the Working Group for initiatives, petitions and proposals.
